I feel like I failed as a parent. My son was having so much fun on his go kart I just let him go and go and go. It stalled out in twilight and I pushed him back to the ‘pits’ he said “we could put more gas in and I could go some more”, I said its “too dark” he said “I can still see” I said no. we worked in the shop for about an hour and he started saying his back hurt. By the time we got in he was really hurting.
Poor guy, I never thought about how sore he might become, I am sure the pain was worth the fun, but had I know I would have made him take Tylenol and a few breaks...

So I feel like a smart parent today. The other day when working on chelating some rust with my son, he asked what “forged” meant. So today I got a slice of bread, pulled up the Epstein’s Wilde plant tour video and made him spread his fingers out and wave his hands in the air. Then I made him interlace his fingers and had him push them into mine. I made him watch the drop forging, and after I explained how the forging pushes the metal grains together and makes then stronger. Then we each ate a ¼ slice of fluffy bread. Then I smushed the other ¼ slices and made them quite dense. Then showing him how much harder the bread was after smushing them together and how much denser and stronger it was. I gave my 7-year old a lesson in molecular metallurgy that I hope he remembers.

So yesterday I finally got some red paint on the welding/cutting table. But the big story other than teaching my son a lesson in metallurgy was this craigslist find. These lockers, clean, great condition, all but one of them with keys and working locks for $40! And less than a half hour away!

I was so lucky to be the first to reply.

Win some lose some.
I got a great deal off CL yesterday on the lockers, today I wasted an hour and a half and $10 worth of gas looking at a gas welding set up. the tanks were empty.

Today the welding/cutting table made it into the shop, close to its final destination. With the help of my wife and son I no longer have a black grille on the jeep. Too dark out to take pics but tomorrow is a parade so I will take a pic and post up.

I have been working on some molasses chelation for rust removal. I have a vise that is rusted solid still no joy at braking it loose. It develops a yucky mold on top.
Here is the yucky mold.

And these are some gems after a week. They cleaned up nice.

So I did my part to help put the new Z-28 into production the other day. The company I work for supply’s reusable dunnage for all sorts of parts, and it just so happened GM picked us to do a wheel tray for the new 19” wheel on the Z-28. We do a fair amount of wheel trays. The Z-28’s have different wheels front and rear and the tray had to accommodate both of them.

I like the “Z-28” embossed into the rim.

Yesterday on the way home from the hospital we stopped at yard sale where I had gotten some good deals in the past. They were light on tools this time but I picked up a lifting sling for a good price and picked up a 2 gallon plastic gas can W/ old easy screw on non EPA spout in good condition. (For my mom, I only use metal cans) I paid a lot for it but it was in really nice condition, and my mom needed one.
